Review: This Is Not a Test – Courtney Summers

“It’s the end of the world. Six students have taken cover I Cortege High, but shelter is little comfort when the dead outside won’t stop pounding on the doors. For Sloane Price, the end has never been something to fear. Six months ago, her world collapsed, and since then, she’s failed to find a reason to keep going.

As the days crawl by, and the motivations for survival change, the group’s fate is determined less and less by what’s happening outside and more and more by the unpredictable and violent bids for life – and death – inside.”

This Is Not a Test is a novel written by the author Courtney Summers and is another great book of the zombie apocalypse theme, which may be one of my favorite themes in books, movies and especially video games.

This Is Not a Test

The main story is the same as always; for some unknown reason people are turning into zombies in the town of Cortege which is where the main character Sloane lives, and her and another group of people has found shelter and are trying to survive the apocalypse. What makes this story different from all the others is the fact that the story sees the zombie apocalypse in another perspective than what the usual stories do. Sloane is depressive and suicidal because of issues that happened before the apocalypse even began, so she sees the end of the world as an opportunity to leave the world behind. Instead of focusing on survival, the story portrays the mind of a person who is ready to let go of the world. I find this very interesting as it gives the reader a new way of looking at things.

As the story presses on, the reader is introduced to Sloane’s sister Lily through Sloane’s thoughts, who left her six months earlier which is the reason for Sloane’s misery. Every thought our main character processes keeps going back to her sister, and only after a few pages into the book you will notice how much this fact bothers and controls Sloane throughout the rest of the story. It’s interesting how it’s not the present that controls Sloane, but the past.

With that said, the novel still contains all of the things we love about zombie books; the fights with gory zombies, blood, the extremely hard choices you have to make during an apocalypse, issues in the group which makes you take the wrong choices, death, plot twists and lots of surprises.
